The Core Curriculum Committee held its meeting Friday, February 29, 2008 at 3:00 pm in the Roan
Mountain Room, Plemmons Student Union. The following members were in attendance: Dr. Victor
Mansure, Dr. Dave Haney, Dr. James Ivory, Dr. Lynne Getz, Dr. Jon Saken, Dr. Gwen Robbins, Ms.
Sue Williams, Dr. Heather Clark, and Mr. Philip Schneider. The following member was excused: Dr.
Ivan Roten. The following guest was in attendance: Dr. Alexandra Sterling-Hellenbrand, Foreign
Languages & Literatures.

Dr. Victor Mansure called the meeting to order at 3:05 p.m.

MOTIONS AND ACTIONS

1. Motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes of the January 25, 2008 meeting.

    The motion passed with one abstention.

2. Motion was made and seconded to approve selected topics course MUS 35xx, Music, Culture, and
Dialogue, for Core Humanities (Fine Arts) credit.

    The motion passed unanimously.

3. Motion was made and seconded to approve selected topics course MUS 35xx, Music, Culture, and
Dialogue, for MC designator.

    The motion passed unanimously.

4. Motion was made and seconded to approve F L 2100, Language and Culture: Selves and Others, for
Core Humanities credit.

    A member noted that the course seems to have elements of both Humanities and Social Science. Dr.
    Alexandra Sterling-  Hellenbrand replied that Foreign Languages & Literatures is a Humanities
    department, so she felt more comfortable offering the course as Humanities. Another member noted
    that the proposed description should have Core: Humanities added.

    The motion passed unanimously.

5. Motion was made and seconded to approve F L 2100, Language and Culture: Selves and Others, for
    MC designator.

    A member asked why the department did not request the MC designator for all courses being
    considered today. Dr. Sterling-Hellenbrand said they were asking for the designators attached to the
    special topics versions of the courses, and wouldn't want to presume that every course in the
    department is automatically multicultural.

    The motion passed unanimously.

6. Motion was made and seconded to approve FRE 2045, Children's and Adolescent Literature, for
    W designator.

    Dr. Haney suggested that the department consult with English because of their course in children's
    literature.

    The motion passed unanimously.

7. Motion was made and seconded to approve FRE 2045, Children's and Adolescent Literature, for
    MC designator.

    The motion passed unanimously.

8. Motion was made and seconded to approve FRE 2055, Women Writers of French Expression, for
    W designator.

    The motion passed unanimously.

9. Motion was made and seconded to approve FRE 2055, Women Writers of French Expression, for
    MC designator.

    The motion passed unanimously.

10. Motion was made and seconded to approve FRE 2065, Black Writers of French Expression, for
      W designator.

    The motion passed unanimously.

11. Motion was made and seconded to approve FRE 2065, Black Writers of French Expression, for
      MC designator.

    The motion passed unanimously.

12. Motion was made and seconded to approve FRE 3035, Literature and Film, for Core Humanities
      (Literature) credit.

    The motion passed unanimously.

13. Motion was made and seconded to approve FRE 3035, Literature and Film, for W designator.

    The motion passed unanimously.

14. Motion was made and seconded to approve FRE 3035, Literature and Film, for MC designator.

    The motion passed unanimously.

15. Motion was made and seconded to approve FRE 3050, Masterworks of Francophone Literature,
      for Core Humanities (Literature) credit.

    The motion passed unanimously.

      for W designator.

    The motion passed unanimously.
