The Core Curriculum Council held its meeting Friday, November 18, 2005 at 3:00pm in the Watauga
River Room, Plemmons Student Union. The following members were in attendance: Dr. Bill Ward, Dr.
Rennie Brantz, Ms. Joni Petschauer, Dr. Jay Fenwick, Dr. Lynne Getz, Mr. Jeff Tiller, Dr. Victor
Mansure, and Mr. John Abbott. The following members were excused: Ms. Joy Clawson, Dr. Heather
Clark, and Ms. Christina Kapely. The following guests were in attendance: Dr. Melanie Greene,
Curriculum & Instruction; Dr. David Domermuth, Technology; Mr. Eric Reichard, Technology; Dr. Jim
Young, Geography & Planning; Dr. Don Amoroso, Computer Information Systems.
Dr. Brantz called the meeting to order at 3:10 p.m.
MOTIONS AND ACTIONS
1. Motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes of the October 28, 2005 meeting.
The motion passed unanimously.
2. Motion was made and seconded to consider C I 4490, Middle Grades Curriculum, Instruction, and
Assessment, for S designator.
A question was asked about the percentage of the grade in the course determined by the speaking.
Dr. Melanie Greene responded that 30% of the grade is determined by the internship evaluation.
A question was asked about the type of feedback received and the opportunity for improvement.
Dr. Greene responded that the student is given feedback from a university supervisor as well as the
teacher over the course of 5 weeks. The evaluation instrument is a standardized form from the
School of Education .
Recommendation was made that the syllabus be revised to specify the percentage of the grade
determined by speaking assignments.
The motion passed unanimously.
3. Motion was made and seconded to consider C I 4490, Middle Grades Curriculum, Instruction,
and Assessment, for W designator.
A question was asked about how the mechanics of writing are addressed. Dr. Greene responded
that the first paper is graded on grammar and content. The North Carolina Reflective Cycle (used
for teachers) is used for the second paper, which reflects on the internship.
The motion passed unanimously.
4. Motion was made and seconded to consider G&I 4512, Advanced Electronic Imaging/Cross Media
for C designator.
The motion passed unanimously.
5. Motion was made and seconded to consider G&I 4512, Advanced Electronic Imaging/Cross Media for ND designator.
The motion passed unanimously.
6. Motion was made and seconded to consider TEC 3702, Electronic Imaging, for C designator.
The representatives were asked to describe the computer usage in the course. Dr. David
Domermuth responded that students must digitally manipulate images to prepare them for
printing.
The motion passed unanimously.
7. Motion was made and seconded to consider INT 2303, CAD for Interiors, for deletion of C
designator.
The motion passed unanimously.
8. Motion was made and seconded to consider INT 2302, Interior Design Presentation, for C designator.
The motion passed unanimously.
9. Motion was made and seconded to consider INT 3320, Environment and Human Behavior, for W
designator.
Papers for the class are reviewed and rewritten, and writing makes up 45% of the final grade.
The motion passed unanimously.
10. Motion was made and seconded to consider GHY 3820, GIS for the Environmental and Social
Sciences, for C designator
Dr. Jim Young explained that the course is intended to give students a basic introduction to GIS
and spatial analysis. They will be introduced to digital analysis of satellite imagery and basic
mapping skills.
The motion passed unanimously.
11. Motion was made and seconded to consider PE 1042, Beginning Snowboarding, for Core
Physical Activity/Wellness credit.
The motion passed unanimously.
12. Motion was made and seconded to consider PE 1043, Intermediate Snowboarding, for Core
Physical Activity/Wellness credit.
The motion passed unanimously.
13. Motion was made and seconded to consider special topics course CHE 2530, Appreciating and
Understanding Wine,
for CD designator.
The motion passed unanimously.
14. Motion was made and seconded to consider special topics course CHE 2530, Appreciating and
Understanding Wine, for MC designator.
The motion passed unanimously.
15. Motion was made and seconded to consider A S 4010, Bluegrass Traditions, for CD designator.
The motion passed unanimously.
16. Motion was made and seconded to consider COM 4040, International Advertising, for MC
designator.
Recommendation to add MC to proposed catalog description on page 2 of proposal before
sending to AP&P.
The motion passed unanimously.
OTHER BUSINESS
1. Ms. Joni Petschauer reported on the frequency of requests for Core/designator waivers and
substitutions in the summer and fall 2005 semesters.
