MOTIONS AND ACTIONS
1. Motion was made and seconded to consider approval of the minutes of the November 19, 2004 Core Curriculum Council meeting. The motion passed with eight in favor and one abstention.
2. Motion was made and seconded to consider ART 3330, United States Art History, for deletion from the Core Curriculum.
Dr. Jim Toub and Dr. Laura Ives explained that the course has not been taught for 6 years. The course has 2 prerequisites, so it is difficult for students to get into the class. Also, recent changes to the Art History curriculum have added 2 new courses that include United States Art History. The deletion of this course will allow the Art department to offer more sections of other survey courses that receive Core credit.
The motion passed unanimously.
3. Motion was made and seconded to consider COM 3110, Small Group Communication, for S designator.
Members noted that the proposal submitted had no syllabus attached.
Motion was made and approved to postpone consideration of the proposal until the next meeting. The secretary of the committee will contact the department regarding submission of the syllabus.
4. Motion was made and seconded to consider COM 3910, International Experience, for MC designator.
It was noted that all courses with an overseas component automatically get the MC designator. Although this course does not take place overseas, it does prepare students to go overseas and the syllabus requires the use of newspapers from the country to be visited.
The motion passed unanimously.
OTHER BUSINESS
1. Dr. Ward distributed the preliminary results from the Fall 2004 surveys of the Computer and Cross-Disciplinary designators. These results are broken down by college. Fully broken down statistics will not be available until the end of the academic year; at that time, they will be broken down at the department level.
2. Members discussed the need to re-evaluate the current designator descriptions. Dr. Ward appointed the following members to a sub-committee to review all the descriptions to see which need to be updated: Dr. Jay Fenwick, Dr. Victor Mansure, Mr. John Abbott and Mr. Thomas Shook. The sub-committee will make a report at the next meeting. It was noted that if substantive changes are made to a designator, a decision will have to be made as to how to treat courses that received the designator under the old standards.
3. Ms. Clawson distributed a sheet outlining the designator waiver totals for the Fall 2004 semester. Members discussed why students are not meeting the requirements and must seek waivers. Is the root cause a lack of course offerings with particular designators or poor advising? It was noted that some majors have no courses with particular designators, and that students may change their registration after their advising appointment without regard to the need to consider their designator status. Most students receive a substitution rather than a waiver. This substitution can come from work experience, transfer credit or through a course that meets the designator requirements but has not been formally approved to receive the designator. It was noted that the amount of time devoted to waivers and substitutions has greatly increased. It was suggested that a less paper-intensive process may encourage more departments to apply for designators. Ms. Clawson noted that some departments have asked for their waiver statistics so they can review their offerings.
4. Dr. Ward announced that the General Curriculum Review Task Force has been formed, but it is not yet known what its recommendations will be or when they will be made.
