OTHER BUSINESS
The council again discussed implications and logistics of assuming responsibility for General Education assessment. Dr. Ward noted that the present council did not seem ready to take on such a responsibility, and suggested the creation of another committee to take on that duty. The creation of such a new committee would need approval from Faculty Senate. There was some discussion as to whether a new committee should be totally separate from the current Core Curriculum Council, or if it should be a subcommittee of the council. Eleanor Cook noted the need for the new committee to have some seasoned members of the current Core Curriculum Council for continuity and a sense of the designator history. Ed Folts opposed a Core Curriculum Council subcommittee on assessment, because the same group making the rules and voting on designators would be assessing and reviewing the outcomes. Dr. Ward asked if this undertaking should be done before or after SACs visit, and Dr. Sharp replied that there was no reason that we could not begin to explore and develop a new method of assessment while still employing the current model.
It was decided that Drs. Sharp, Smith, and Sawyer should be present at the remainder of the Core Curriculum Council meetings this year as we continue to discuss General Education assessment. It was also decided that a proposal for evaluating General Education courses would be produced by the Core Curriculum Council during this academic year.
The meeting adjourned at 3:45 p.m. The next meeting of the Core Curriculum Council will be on Friday, November 17 at 2:00 p.m. in the New River Room, Plemmons Student Union.
